Built Environment and Active Transportation Survey
Built Environment and Active Transportation to and from School Study
n 2024, our Safe Routes to School team partnered with consultants to take a closer look at how the design of our communities affects how students travel to and from school. The result is the BEATS Study — a comprehensive regional assessment of infrastructure, safety, and opportunities for walking and biking at schools across East Central Wisconsin.
Focusing on four case study schools in urban, suburban, and rural communities, the report highlights barriers to active transportation, analyzes crash and risk data, and provides actionable recommendations to make school travel safer and more accessible. The study also explores the economic and policy impacts of investing in Safe Routes to School strategies.
The final report was submitted on May 30, 2025, and is now available to the public.
