The East Central Frequent Walker Program and contests encourage children to walk by making it fun and rewarding. Programs are typically organized by the schools Physical Education Teacher or another School Champion . Students participate by tracking the miles they walk using a pedometer or online tracker and often walking in a designated area around the school. This allows students who cannot walk to or from school the opportunity to stay active. Students can track their progress in two ways, paper tracking or by using the electronicEZ Scan software from Fitness Finders. EZ Scan is an app downloaded on a tablet or phone and it electronically tracks the number of miles students walk. Students who participate receive small prizes when they reach their mileage benchmarks to recognize and encourage their efforts. A guidebook with participation ideas and themes is provided from the Safe Routes to School team.
Toolkits containing student incentives are available to schools participating in the East Central Regional SRTS Program . To register your school to receive a Frequent Walker Program Toolkit please contact Kim at kdieck@ecwrpc.org.
